About Maria Amalia Souza

After 39+ years dreaming and building a grant making structure, nourishing it and seeing it grow, I feel like finally my ideas are gaining the world. On Women's Day 2023 I was honored as one of "16 Women Restoring the Earth" by Global Landscapes Forum, and in June received the Up With People J. Blanton Belk Award for Outstanding Services to Humanity. I'm the Founder, former ED, current Strategic Development Director of Casa Socio-Environmetal Fund. We support frontline based solutions for the protection of Brazil's major biomes at unprecedented scale -- upscaling the volume of funds and grants, and systemically out-scaling to reach thousands of local communities per year -- the real protectors of our major biomes, without whom it is plain impossible to save our forests, rivers, wetlands, coasts and all life sustaining places of this Earth. With this in mind, we not only make grants ourselves, but we support other community and thematic funds. We have also supported the creation of likeminded socio-environmental funds across the Global South. We co-founded the Alianza Socioambiental Fondos del Sur, the Comuá Network of Brazilian philanthropy for social change, and are very engaged in international philanthropic spaces like HRFN, Edge Funders Alliance, WINGS, Philanthropy Together, Myriad USA, and so many others.I have personally dedicated my life to help global philanthropy to understand we won't have a planet if resources don't reach local hands in the Global South immediately. To take steps towards this goal I have been loud! I've lectured all over the world and, in pandemic times the webinars multiplied! Now we are back to many conferences around the planet, because we are still very far from reaching our goal.I'm currently a Board member at AIDA-Interamerican Association for Environmental Defense, and have sat on my boards and committees along my career. Among professional roles, I have done independent consulting for corporations, worked with Global Greengrants, APC, and many international environmental NGOs over the years; and fundraised for Indigenous and Forest Peoples. The vision behind this Life Plan comes from studying International Services & Development and Environmental Studies at World College West, CA, being a fellow in Donella Meadows Sustainability program to learn about systems dynamic tools, and diving into deep ecology experiences from masters like Joanna Macy. Traveling extensively, and taking my singing and playing along 60+ countries, strengthens the spirit to continue the Journey.

The Casa Socio-Environmental Fund in an organization seeking to promote environmental conservation and sustainability, democracy, respect for socio-environmental rights and social justice through financial support to civil society initiatives and by strengthening their capacities in South America. We have pioneered the debate on socio-environmental philanthropy in Brazil since 2005. Our mission is to generate positive impact on very diverse territories, investing in the lives of those who care for them, and establishing connections between communities and organizations. To this end, we developed a powerful support network for small civil society initiatives — a network that mobilizes funds, provides support and strengthens capacities, thus ensuring increasing autonomy for groups spread all over South America. We believe change begins by listening, and we listen to the real protagonists of every cause we embrace: those whose lives are directly affected by any change in their territories.

Along 30+ years working in this field, I have seen great needs in both sides -- civil society that needs support for valuable work and funders/donors investing millions with lesser returns than expected. This is not necessary if some simple but insightful measures are taking and capacity built in both sides. Having found and run a small grants fund for the past 12 years, I feel this experience should be made available to funders who seriously want their philanthropic work to have real impact.
