On a monthly basis I was also responsible for checking chlorine levels in random water samples. Other tasks of my job included bottling up and vial samples for analysts, checking solvent and consumable stocks, receiving deliveries and logging new chemicals in the correct place. Regarding laboratory house keeping, to ensure a clean and tidy workplace, I would also dispose finished solvents and rinse glassware to be ready to be used. During my time as a Chemistry Technician, I was asked to create a catalogue and organize the LC and GC parts in a practical and straightforward way. The catalogue was created in Microsoft Excel, which included the part name and part number, the quantity available and where the part was located. The parts were organised in shelf bins named in order, and dividers were also make to simplify the process of looking for a part. As my role involves supporting the Organic Chemistry department, adaptability is a key skill. This means I could be asked to help in other different tasks such as preparing internal standard solutions for analysts, archiving reports or assist with the validation of chlorine meters. I had also the opportunity to learn and become competent on two GC-MS methods accredited by UKAS: identification and quantification of THMS (trihalomethanes) and BTEX compounds in treated water samples. This led me to becoming an Organic Chemistry Analyst. Show less
