The U4C is a year long intensive urban immersion program for college students. I went through the program when I was in college, and loved it enough to come back as staff. My role as a resident director was to offer mentoring, organize community events, and show the students the ropes of living in the inner city. We built relationships with our neighbors from Somalia, Ethiopia, Egypt, Israel, and countless other countries. I went through the program when I was in college, and loved it enough to come back as staff. My role as a resident director was to offer mentoring, organize community events, and show the students the ropes of living in the inner city. We built relationships with our neighbors from Somalia, Ethiopia, Egypt, Israel, and countless other countries. We participated in neighborhood safety awareness events and visited an array of human services offered in Minneapolis. I was responsible for connecting students to local internships with justice-focused non-profits. Learning happens through classes but is also hands-on. Students learn about demographics, urban social psychology, race and ethnicity in America, non-profit management, and urban economics and entrepreneurship. One2One is an incredible organization that partners with already-existing institutions and offers one-on-one mentoring for survival-based youth. I had the honor of being one of the program coordinators, so I got to facilitate classroom activities, get to know the kids, and also be a mentor to the mentors. I was responsible for curriculum development and weekly program preparation, implementation, and evaluation.One2One is unique in that it recruits mentors from local community colleges and beyond, offering survival-based youth a direct connection to the reality of post-high school education. We trained the mentors in the mentality of “I can learn from you, my mentee” rather than, “I’m the adult with all the right answers.” We believe that by fostering positive inter-generational relationships, we are impacting the present and future health of the community at large. One2One prides itself in offering mentors from diverse ethic groups to reflect the demographic of the students at its schools.
