According to Heraclitus the path up the mountain and the path down the mountain are one and the same. We can argue the finer points of what Heraclitus meant by this and the ways it relates to his theories of flux. But applied to life it can mean that sometimes when we think ourselves headed in one direction, we are really headed in another.My path to studying Philosophy and English at Indiana University South Bend was anything but linear. I started out my college career as a Violin Performance major, transferred to study Art History, then Writing, and eventually landed myself at IUSB pursuing what I truly love—philosophy and using my writing knowledge to share the philosophical “good life” with others. I used to think of my non-linear path as a disadvantage, but a philosopher’s greatest advantage often lies in her ability to make connections between diverse ideas. Through diverse experience I have learned skills of research, analysis and problem-solving. I’ve learned to be a self-starter and that I can thrive in any environment. Most importantly, I’ve discovered my passion for sharing philosophy and probing people to ask deeper questions. These are all things I hope to carry with me as I continue on in my career, both inside and outside academia.
