All my life I've had an interest in art. I'm a sketcher, painter, collage artist, you name it. However, over the years I've sometimes found it hard to justify spending time on these hobbies that aren't traditionally considered "productive" or "an efficient use of my time". In a world moving at lightning speed, it's easy to feel ashamed of stopping to smell the roses. It was through architecture that I had a complete change of heart and developed a new understanding of life.What they teach us in health class is that everyone needs food, water, clothing, and shelter to survive. Not once do they mention the arts; they don't even mention the quality of the necessities. If a shelter could be a hut in the woods, why have architecture?I finally found my answer, the reason I've stuck with art for all these years: art is what keeps people living. To just survive is the bare minimum. We do these "silly" things like doodle on the margins, binge Netflix for entire weekends, and dedicate entire industries to art as building forms to elevate experience beyond mere survival. As the one thing that every human being has in common, the built environment is a golden opportunity to paint the world in a coat of wonder and improve the lives of everyone it touches. This is why I love architecture and what I aspire to bring to the community through my work.
