I am a neuroscientist passionate about science and health policy, with experience working across academic, governmental, and non-profit research teams. I hold a Bachelor of Science in Ecology and Evolutionary Biology from Yale University, where I completed a neuroscience-based thesis examining the cognitive effects of Early Life Stress in mouse models. Currently, as a doctoral candidate in the Department of Psychiatry at Emory University, my research focuses on the physiological mechanisms linking traumatic stress to adverse maternal health outcomes in Black pregnant persons. After completing my doctorate, I aim to apply my interdisciplinary scientific expertise in the public health or science policy sectors, particularly in initiatives that address racial-ethnic health disparities and education inequities. I am open to exploring new opportunities within policy.Interests: Health Disparities, Community Health, Community Outreach, Behavioral Health Interventions, Environmental Justice, Maternal Health Equity, Diversity and Inclusion in Education, Science and Research Practices, BioethicsSUMMARY OF QUALIFICATIONS:• Six (+) years of experience in biomedical research, working in both basic and behavioral health sciences. • Laboratory Skills: Clinical interviews, EMG, ECG, skin conductance, longitudinal growth curve modeling, voltammetry, qPCR, behavioral testing, immunohistochemistry, PCR, gel electrophoresis, imaging •Computational Skills: MPlus, R, SPSS, MindWare (BioLab), MATLAB, ImageJ, RedCap, Microsoft Excel, Word, PowerPoint • Excellent analytical, critical thinking, communication, leadership and organizational skills;• Bilingual: Ability to fluently read, write, and speak Spanish and English at a collegiate level (Native speaker born in Mexico)Contact me directly at mariana.rocha@emory.edu, I would love to connect with you!

Doctoral CandidateEmory University Aug 2021 - PresentAtlanta, Georgia, United StatesUnder the direction of Dr. Vasiliki Michopoulos, I lead a research project investigating the physiological mechanisms linking trauma, PTSD, and gestational metabolic disease in Black individuals. This work contributes to a broader understanding of maternal health disparities and has the potential to influence public health interventions. -
Personal Statement ReviewerCientíFico Latino Sep 2023 - PresentI work directly with prospective graduate students from underrepresented backgrounds to strengthen their application materials for STEM doctoral and masters programs. I specialize in providing productive feedback for personal, research and diversity statements in the form of individual feedback and group workshops. -
English Spanish TranslatorScience Gallery Atlanta Feb 2022 - Apr 2022I translated museum labels to increase accessibility for Spanish-speaking attendees. Critically, because Spanish is a highly-gendered language, we used gender-neutral terms throughout to increase inclusivity for trans and gender non-conforming museum visitors. The Science Gallery Network strives to deliver education and cultural experiences for young people that combine art and science. The 2022 exhibition focused on various forms of addiction. -

Yale Science, Technology And Research Scholars Ii ScholarYale University Jan 2018 - May 2020New Haven, Connecticut, United StatesLed by Dr. Arie Kaffman in the Department of Psychiatry, I studied the neurodevelopmental impacts of early life stress in a rodent model. For my senior thesis, I spearheaded and published a meta–analysis and systematic review on early life stress paradigms in rodents, contributing to scientific knowledge of how early life stressors lead to deficits in hippocampal–dependent memory. -
Amgen ScholarAmgen Jun 2017 - Aug 2017National Institutes Of HealthUnder the direction of Dr. Veronica Alvarez, I conducted a research project on the role of Mu–opioid receptor knockdown in direct medium spiny neurons, examining its effects on alcohol consumption behavior in a mouse model. I presented this work at the 2017 National Institutes of Health Summer Poster Day.
