Mariana R.P. Alves is a post-doctoral researcher at the Centre for Research into Didactics and Technology in the Training of Trainers (CIDTFF) at University of Aveiro, Portugal. She is also pro-bono co-director of Cartas com Ciência (www.cartascomciencia.org/en), a non-profit association that works with low-income communities in Portuguese-speaking countries to counter social inequalities through science. Her research focuses on the democratisation of science and equitable science communication and education. Since 2012, Mariana has participated in and led several science and society initiatives in different countries (from radio broadcasting to art&science) pro-bono. She worked as Science Democratisation Project Lead at the Gulbenkian Collaborative Centre for one year. She has a PhD in Molecular Biology from the University of Heidelberg and EMBL (Germany), which followed her molecular biology research experience in Cambridge (United Kingdom), Copenhagen (Denmark) and Coimbra (Portugal) and preceded her postdoctoral research in science communication and education. Her work for Cartas com Ciência was recognized by the Top 100 Women in Social Enterprise 2021. Beyond (or within, depending on the perspectives) democratisation of science and equitable science communication and education, she also has a strong interest in art and science and science philosophy, particularly in the interference of values in research and how that impacts science and society interactions (see article below).
