The Center for Excellence in Education (CEE) hosts 84 top achieving U.S. high school and international scholars to the 37th annual Research Science Institute (RSI), jointly sponsored with the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). RSI is an intensive, six-week program that gives students the opportunity to conduct original, cutting-edge science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) research. The Research Science Institute offers top academic math and science students the opportunity to experience graduate-level research and camaraderie with other talented STEM scholars. The RSI annual summer program consists of one week of theoretical classroom work, followed by four-and-a-half weeks of high-level research under the mentorship of leading scientists, engineers, and researchers in the students’ respective areas of interest. In their final week, students demonstrate their research work through written academic papers and oral presentations to their peers and a panel of judges.Under the tutelage of Mr. Geoffrey Smith, I completed the research project, GPU-Accelerated Rendering of the Apollonian Gasket.

Research collaboration and cultural exchange with Korea Science Academy of KAIST. Research Summary:We have assessed various adsorbents for their ability to remove pyrethroids from solutions with concentrations in the microgram/L to mg/L range. Pyrethroids, while being more chemically stable than natural pyrethrins, are seeing a huge increase in usage around the world due to their various attractive characteristics. Due to numerous reasons such as their degradation being rapid, relative safety towards mammals, research on their removal has not yet been done, to the best of our knowledge. In this research, we have successfully demonstrated the ability of common adsorbents like zeolites and activated carbons to eliminate pyrethroids from solutions, providing a much-needed starting point for future research.
