My previous experience from General Nephrology set me up to be aware of the possible renal complications of Cardiac disease, and from cardiac surgery. Cardiac Surgery provided deep experience in assessing, planning, and implementing care of patients pre-op and ongoing post op card. During this time I gained experience caring for patients on cardiac monitoring, wound care, stroke rehab, care of chest drains, central lines, tracheotomy and mini tracheotomy care, telemetry, and has specialised on-site training in CSISU, HDU and Progressive Care based on the ward for lower risk Day 0 and Day 1 patients post op. It was also my duty to be the nurse in charge several shifts per week and provide mentoring to junior staff and students. I became highly skilled at administering medication, IV medication, blood drawing and all the essential nursing care and emotional support, advocacy and communication that nursing requires.

This was my first Nursing position after graduation and it was an amazing learning curve where I became more confident in assessing, planning and implementing patient care as a Staff Nurse. I gained experience caring for patents on regular dialysis, patients with renal line infections, patients awaiting renal transplant and care of the dying patient at the end stage of renal failure. It was a true honour to work in this settling.
