Maria Ramos is a choreographer, dancer and teacher based in Lisboa. She completed the four year dance course (BA) at EDDC - European Dance Development Centre - Hogeschool voor de Kunsten Arnhem (HKA, 2000) and the Masters (MA) at ArtEZ Institute of the Arts (ArtEZ, 2008). Maria worked as a dancer with several companies and independent choreographers, performing in Europe and in the USA, underlining the work with Choreographer/Director Angus Balbernie (2000-2009), produced by several festivals and dance organizations in Germany, UK and USA: Tanzhaus NRW Dusseldorf & Cologne; Centre for Contemporary Arts – CCA, Glasgow; Tobacco Factory Theatre, Bristol; Taking Risks Festival Swindon; Theatre QEH, Bristol; Dance Mission Theater, San Francisco (USA).Her own choreographic work has been supported through artistic commissions, grants, festivals, theatres, as well as Gulbenkian Foundation (Lisboa) and the Portuguese Ministry of Culture (DGArtes). Her work has been presented in Portugal, The Netherlands and Buenos Aires. Maria has been working on a cycle of works in which she approaches choreography as ‘landscape-in-action’ (a term she has been using since 2012 to describe her work), dealing with theatrical and environmental notions where the human is not necessarily seen as protagonist but as part of ‘that’ particular 'nature' created on stage. Something Still Uncaptured (part of this cycle of works) has been recently performed at 'P de Dança' a dance event organised and presented at Gulbenkian Foundation (Lisboa, 2021).Maria is a regular guest teacher and choreographer at Escola Superior de Dança (since 2017), where she teaches Contemporary Dance Technique; Choreography-Creation and European Repertoire, and at ESAD.CR, faculty of theatre (since 2016) where she teaches body practices to theatre students. Maria is also a regular teacher-choreographer at Forum Dança, forming the Choreographic Laboratory, where she teaches Composition-Improvisation and Performance Practices since 2015.She has been invited to write about her practice-based research for The Dutch Society for Dance Research (VDO) and ArtEZ Press.
