Profile bio

About Maria Thiaw, Ms, Mfa

I am a creative and strategic thinker with advanced communication skills, committed to the development of high quality, outcomes-based, student-centered courses in the areas of creative writing, literature, communication, and composition. I've been publicly recognized for my diversity efforts and inclusive liberal arts courses. Using the arts as a pathway to learning, I involve my students in projects that will get them engaged, motivated and inspired. My successful choreopoem, Reclaiming My Time: An American Griot Project, was staged at the Capital BlueCross Theatre in Women's History Month, 2018. Students were involved in many aspects including interviewing and recording oral histories, tech/crew/lighting, acting, and promotions. Through the American Griot Project, I use historiographic poetics to teach history, writing and public speaking in an innovative way. I developed this choreopoem based on the oral histories of women ages 65 - 95. The production connects the experiences of the past with the activism of today. I was proud to present it to 4 sold-out houses March 8 - 11th, 2018.I've had 3 full-length poetry collections and 1 chapbook published. My poems, news, and reviews have been published in several significant publications including New Letters, Come Shining: On Writing in a Dark Time, Black Lives Have Always Mattered, and One Trick Pony Review. I have significant editorial experience with literary magazines and I've given dynamic poetry readings on stages throughout the U.S. and in the South of France. I continue to hone my craft, actively seek publication, and conduct scholarly research about creative writing pedagogy, and historiographic poetics. I would love to connect with other professionals committed to student-centered learning, writing program development, and community arts programs.

Listed skills include Creative Writing, Public Speaking, Event Planning, Editing, and 27 others.
