Phoenix Eye Pty Ltd is an independent film and art production house based in Western Sydney. Fellowship Recipient – Maria TranMaria Tran is an exciting Australian-Vietnamese filmmaker from Western Sydney representing upcoming and innovative artists from the region and places Western Sydney in an international context. Maria has had a significant career to date as an award-winning interdisciplinary performing artist, filmmaker and martial artist working across video, performance and action choreography. Her work investigates Asian-Australian cultural identity, diaspora and gender roles in screen culture through action comedy in kung-fu suburban environments. She grew up in Western Sydney and her work is embedded within her community and in cultural development practice, solidified through her work with organisations ICE, PYT, C3West and MCA. She has worked as Stunt Coordinator on ABC series “Tiger Cops” and as Screen NSW Stunt Attachment for Jackie Chan’s Bleeding Steel among other roles.Program of ActivityAs the Western Sydney Arts Fellow, Maria will embark on a significant period of professional development in South East Asia (Hong Kong, Thailand & Vietnam) that involves mentorships and research, collaborations and exchanges with leaders in the industry. Maria’s research will explore the nostalgia of onscreen female action heroines and how they can also empower a new generation of artists by connecting with urban movement artists in Western Sydney. Digital Time Capture looks at the photographic journeys of its locals, places and memories that the older residents are keen to record their stories and hand it down to the next generations. Digital storytelling workshops aim to provide a safe, open and positive environment for participants to share their stories and bring in their photos and objects and expand of these themes. Maria Tran will lead the art facilitation process, and the attached artists will provide their technical expertise in filmmaking, computer skills, audio recording and photograph scanning and manipulation.

8 weeks Artist Residency @ Lost in BooksTo explore a Vietnamese legend story of the Trung Sisters, female warriors who fought against adversity 4,000 years ago. This story is important to Vietnamese culture. Trung Trac and Trung Nhi were the first female rulers and become queens of Nanyue (Ancient Vietnam). The only surviving text of the exist lies in the  Book of the Later Han, 5th century . Maria plans to create a Vietnamese/English Children's Bilingual Book working in consultation with the Vietnamese community in Australia and abroad.

Over 300 photos will be put onto tiles to tell the story of the area from the days of the Cabrogal people of the Darug tribe to the first settlers and immigrants until today.As a cultural practitioner, my role was to liaise with the community and source material for the installation of a outdoor photo wall from Cabramatta’s communities from the 1970s until the 1990s.
