I have a PhD in Ocean and Atmosphere Science from the University of Cape Town (UCT) where I am an Honorary Research Associate of the Department of Oceanography. I have specialized in marine remote sensing for over 15 years with a focus on harnessing satellite earth observation data for coastal marine applications such as harmful algal bloom (HAB) detection, water quality monitoring, as well as aquaculture and fisheries decision support.I am the project lead for the SANSA/NRF NEOFrontiers "Development of new high resolution water quality observation capabilities for coastal and estuarine systems (EO4WQ)" project (https://eo4wq.tumblr.com/) and the CSIR lead for the H2020 All Atlantic Ocean Sustainable, Profitable and Resilient Aquaculture (ASTRAL) project (https://www.astral-project.eu/). I am the technical lead for the Aquaculture & Fisheries, as well as Water Quality services in the National Oceans and Coastal Information Management System (OCIMS2) project (https://www.ocims.gov.za/), and the Aquaculture and Fisheries lead for the Marine and Coastal Operations for the Southern Africa and the Indian Ocean (MarCOSIO) project (https://marcosio.org/) under the GMES&Africa programme. I am also actively involved in post-graduate student supervision and marine earth observation training across Africa.
