    My research focuses on collaborative investigations in civil and chemical engineering, mineralogy, electron microscopy, synchroton radiation applications and archaeological science that are breaking new ground in the characterization of the extraordinary durability and performance of ancient Roman concretes in the monuments of Rome and seawater harbor structures throughout the Mediterranean basin. The central purpose of this research is to discover the empirical and technological expertise of Roman builders, recorded through ancient texts and the material and cementitious characteristics of the 2000-year-old concretes, which are formulated with pyroclastic rocks. I collaborate with archaeologists, mineralogists, civil engineers and material scientists to carry out analytical investigations of the ancient concretes and highly accurate reproductions of these materials. Our new research focuses on the development of cementitious phases in the ancient concretes and a very young reproduction of the mortar of the Markets of Trajan, to describe how these relate to hydrothermal processes in the earth’s crust and how the nanoscale properties of these cementitious phases inform the extraordinary chemical and mechanical durability of the ancient structures. We plan to undertake a new reproduction of the seawater harbor concrete in the near future. The results of these diverse perspectives and analyses will inform the development of specialty properties, including fracture toughness, in future environmentally friendly concrete prototypes based on ancient Roman principles.
