Marie Comuzzo studies how sound mediates the relationship between humans and whales, focusing on how the recognition of whale vocal expression as song has led to human’s deep commitments to marine conservation. She has conducted field work in Massachusetts and Mo’orea (Tahiti) and will soon do more research in Hawaii and New Zealand, trying to understand the complicated relations between scientists, natives, settlers, traveling whale groupies, and marine mammals. Her initial study, “Singing with Whales: Exploring Human and Non-Human Musicalities,” was recently published by SEM Student News. Marie is pursuing a Ph.D. at Brandeis University in Musicology, and she holds a master’s in music history from the University of Massachusetts, Amherst; and a Masters in Women’s, Gender, and Sexuality Studies from Brandeis University.
