One of the founders and our spokesperson was Dr. Red Duke (head of Trauma at Hermann Hospital and founder of Life Flight). I served on the executive management team and contributed to business-plan strategy. I managed site development from concept to execution and maintenance. Directed consumer interface design and had final responsibility for ensuring that the user experience was superior to competing sites. A warm, engaging look, feel and voice were key competitive advantages.• Developed marketing strategy for corporate-to-consumer site positioning; hired and managed staff to develop all content, including original text and video. • Directed development of corporate sales and marketing materials, including presentations, brochures, sales collateral and photography.• Managed multiple third-party creative and technology agencies. • Managed internal technology team for user-interface effectiveness and collaborated on implementation of complex artificial intelligence systems.• Managed a team of 10 internal and contract reports.• Reported to the CEO.The use of artificial intelligence in medical diagnosis was a bit ahead of its time in 2000 and the investment market was skittish due to the dot.com bust. We failed to get our second round of funding and had to shut the company down in late 2000.

Once the project was funded by Benchmark Capital and then Goldman Sachs, I was asked to lead the Interactive (design and development groups for Ashford.com). In the role of Director, Interactive for Ashford.com, I managed the design and new brand positioning on a rigorous pre-IPO deadline. We took the company public in September, 1999• Provided creative direction and managed changes in look and feel that helped drive revenue growth in excess of 700% during the fourth quarter of 1999.• Recruited and managed a team of 50 employees/contractors. • Built in-house photography department with a team of 5 photographers oversaw design and production of over 25,000 items on the site. • Managed third-party arrangements and promotions, including Web implementation and user interface. • Consulted with merchandising, marketing and business development teams to align offline marketing/merchandising strategies with the site’s look and feel. This initiative involved advertisements, promotions and “store-window concept” displays for nine product lines. The effort generated sales which helped the company achieve fourth-quarter revenue goals of $20M, surpassing industry analyst’s expectations for the year.
