The Department of Safety and Homeland Security has in rem jurisdiction over personal property seized by law enforcement from individuals involved in criminal narcotics and traffic stop cases. In this role, I reviewed countless seizure packets produced by law enforcement agencies and analyzed the nexus between the seizure and the individual's criminal wrongdoing. I got to know local law enforcement officers very well and kept them apprised of procedural changes their departments should make regarding property seizures. Additionally, I held my limited student-attorney license for this internship and assisted associate counsel with hearings and settlements between the Department and property claimants.

As a Law Clerk at Held Law Firm, I filled in the gaps wherever the firm needed me. It was a very flexible position. I came to the office 4-5 hours a day and completed research tasks, ran filings to the courthouse, filed documents internally, drafted business organizational documents, covered the reception desk and intake of new cases, and ran errands for the firm depending on the day. I was constantly adjusting to new tasks in this role, and it taught me how to think quickly on my feet.

I assisted Professor Joan Heminway in a research project concerning animals' legal status under current laws. The project took the shape of predicting future legal trends by finding analogies that courts have used to describe animals. The most prominent analogies found were those of pets to children and family members, trained police dogs to weapons, and sport animals to professional athletes. Professor Heminway has used this research in a number of speaking engagements in the past two years.
