During my internship I worked on the CASCAPE project, set out to improve agricultural productivity in Ethiopia. I have been working on the M&E system and developed a gender report.

China

My Bachelor thesis focused on the ability of small-scale bell pepper farmers to start cultivating in a sustainable way in Northern China. I conducted this research for the German company Kräuter Mix and Unilever. I researched the farming system of small-scale farmers and compared this with the 'Unilever Sustainable Agricultural Code' (SAC) in order to see what was needed for the farmers to comply with the code. I made a recommendation report on the best ways to start incorporating sustainability in the farming systems.

Ethiopia

During my six-month Bachelor internship, I collaborated closely with sesame farmers in Northern Ethiopia under the umbrella of Tradin Organic Agriculture B.V., a Dutch company engaged in contracting small-scale organic farmers. My responsibilities extended from overseeing the transportation of sesame from farmers to Addis Ababa to witnessing the hulling process.Upon my arrival, the company had already marked its second anniversary. Despite the good quality of the sesame, challenges surfaced at the farmers' level. Issues relating to communication, documentation, logistics, and a understanding of organic agriculture were evident. I dedicated a significant portion of my internship, working closely at the farmers' level. This hands-on experience allowed me to unravel the root causes behind these challenges and subsequently formulate detailed recommendations on how to enhance the Internal Control System (ICS).
