My experience as a financial auditor was the ​foundation of my career. The intense and focused audit seasons fed my ability to grind and formed my grit (especially for a first-generation Cuban-American woman in a male-led industry in NYC). This experience helped me build the following skills: business acumen, critical thinking, and empathy.​ ​After attaining an accounting​ degree, my natural progression was to work for an accounting firm as a financial auditor. Auditing mid-market businesses allowed me to learn the ins and outs of different types of companies across multiple industries, which helped form my business acumen skills. Working at a mid-size accounting firm exposed me to all the parts of an audit quickly, which helped me build my critical thinking skills. As a first year, I wasn't just stuck on inventory counts and cash audits; I was fortunate enough to work on revenue recognition and review companies' internal procedures. The exposure and ability to learn about many types of companies in such a short time served me well now that I work in venture capital, where one is also exposed to an array of companies quickly. My most important takeaway from auditing was the relationships I built with the people at the companies I audited. Through these engagements, I built empathy for these people that, in essence, I was disrupting with my "investigations."
