Profile bio

About Marilyn Young

I learned the power of storytelling in third grade when I wrote a play about a dog and a cat getting married and having a son, who was a mouse. It got rave reviews from my classmates and, of course, my mom. In fourth grade, I learned the need for an editor when the Valentine’s Day edition of my classroom newspaper featured notes about students who had crushes on each other. When I saw two teachers kissing backstage, I thought it would be sweet to add them. When I handed out my newsletter, my classmates enjoyed it. But it also got a lot of attention from the teachers and the principal. It turns out the teachers I saw kissing were married – to other people. Not long after that, one of the teachers went to a different school and my principal became my first editor.Since then, I've been hooked on telling stories that inform people and make them feel something. I spent most of my career as a journalist at newspapers from small to large. My teams won stacks of awards, but the biggest prize was the difference our work made. We forced governments to do business in public, schools to do a better job of educating children and public safety departments to be more open. We also shared stories about the people and programs making a difference in their communities. Ultimately, I transitioned to corporate communications., focusing on stories that show the companies' heart and impact.First, I told stories about Florida Blue's extraordinary outreach to help its members and the communities where they live. Stories about how nurses and social workers help people get healthy and find assistance paying for necessities, like rent, utility bills and medications. Stories about the lasting impact our foundation's programs and grants make around the state. And stories about employees who make a difference at work and in their communities. I also reported and wrote the scripts for the monthly internal newscast, which featured about 10 stories, and wrote the scripts for our president and CEO’s weekly videos to employees and the communities served by Florida Blue and its parent company GuideWell. Most recently I had the honor of writing stories about Bristol Myers Squibb, a company whose passion to help people and to spread good around the world is like nothing I’ve seen before. The company has programs that provide medications to people worldwide who can’t afford them, employees around the globe who ride bicycles to raise money for cancer research and a Foundation that has made a global impact.I can't wait to see what's next.

Over the years, my freelance clients have included:-- The United Way of Northeast Florida, where I am writing stories that show the impact on the people who are being helped by the nonprofit's programs and partnerships.-- The Florida Times-Union. where I worked for 15 years but left to become editor at another newspaper. A few years later, I took a break from full-time work and did freelance for the Times-Union's J Magazine, which focused on the revitalization of Downtown Jacksonville. My stories included the previously untold story behind a local developer's yearslong quest to redevelop two historic buildings in the urban core and a data-driven examination of the crime issues in Downtown.-- Haskell, which is a world-renowned architecture, engineering and construction firm based in Jacksonville, Florida. This freelance role has given me a chance to share stories about the thoughtful planning, collaboration with clients, and the heart that goes into the projects Haskell is involved in.-- The University of North Florida, where I wrote stories about students, professors and supporters who were integral to the success and reputation of the the largest university in Northeast Florida.

Jul 2017 - Present

Storyteller / Writer, Corporate Communications

Jacksonville, Florida, United States

Bristol Myers Squibb has a history of making life-changing impacts around the globe. I’m thrilled to have had the incredible opportunity to help share those stories.

Feb 2023 - Feb 2024

Communications Managing Editor

Jacksonville, Florida

Wrote stories for internal and external audiences to show Florida Blue is more than just a business that sells health insurance. It's a place where nurses and social workers proactively reach out to help members and nonmembers get and stay healthy. A place where executives believe health care is a right for everyone, not a privilege for only those who can afford it -- especially during the COVID-19 pandemic. And it's a place where Corporate Social Responsibility efforts focus on critical areas like health equity, food security and mental well-being in the communities the company serves.I was also the primary reporter and scriptwriter for the monthly internal newscast, as well as the lead scriptwriter for the CEO's weekly videos. Both of those are among the new skills I learned at the company.

May 2019 - Jun 2022

Editor

Jacksonville, Florida, United States

Drove the reinvention of a stale 100-year-old publication into a vibrant daily newspaper that focused on watchdog reporting, legal affairs, business news and compelling storytelling. Our newsroom staff was only a small fraction of the size of our print and television competitors but we routinely scooped them on breaking news and outperformed them on investigative projects.Strategically tightened our focus so we could concentrate on impactful work, including how a nonprofit mismanaged taxpayer dollars it received to run a park at the front steps of City Hall and how the mayor misused city police officers assigned to provide security for other duties, including paying overtime for them to print copies of the mayor's talking points. In addition to managing the newsroom, I also consistently wrote stories, particularly investigative work and in-depth profiles.

Aug 2013 - Apr 2017

Managing Editor

Jacksonville, Florida, United States

I led one of the state's largest newsrooms, with a strong focus on in-depth projects and watchdog journalism that provided context and solutions for issues in Northeast Florida, including the broad systemic failures over generations that led to Jacksonville becoming Florida’s murder capital and how fire department employees forged paperwork for years instead of doing safety inspections in public buildings.I also focused on mentoring and challenging our staff to reach for goals they didn’t think were possible. When they achieved them, we celebrated. When they didn’t, we tried again.

Jun 1998 - Aug 2013

Managing Editor

The Herald Bulletin

Anderson, Indiana, United States

I started my career at The Herald Bulletin in Anderson, Indiana, as the Lifestyle editor, where we wrote stories that showcased the heart of Madison County. We also tackled social issues. Our award-winning weeklong series about the barriers and struggles faced by the LGBT community led to important community conversations on the topic long before it became part of a national discussion. When I was promoted to managing editor, I shepherded investigative journalism and narrative storytelling into the overall newsroom. I also consistently wrote daily stories and long-term projects, even while managing the 35-person staff.
