About Marina Olga Fernandez, Phd

I studied Biology at the University of Buenos Aires, and become interested in how the environment affects human health. I focused my research on the effects of Endocrine disruptors and diet components on neural circuits that control metabolism and reproduction. During the last years, I also became interested in how our internal and work environment affects our health. I am passionate about environment as a whole, and deeply believe that a good research environment is important not only for the scientists but also for science. From 2019-2022 I was a member of the Committee on Diversity and Inclusion of the Endocrine Society. I consider myself a mindfulness advocate and I hope I can bring some mindful practices to my workplace. I am currently Volunteer Facilitator at Meditate Together (Mindful Leader).Since 2022, I have been Associate Editor at the Journal of the Endocrine Society, member of the Research Affairs Core Committee and part of the delegation of the Endocrine Society at the INC to develop a legally binding instrument on plastic pollution.My skills include critical thinking, adaptability, connection, networking and organization. I have demonstrated ability in working as part of teams, as well as in leadership positions. The Covid pandemic helped me to learn a lot about myself, the things I am able to do, and the many places where I can help others, sometimes without even realizing.     My project involves the use of cell lines and in-vitro techniques to elucidate the effects of endocrine disruptors on the physiology of the gonadotrope and GnRH neuron. I am studying the effects on signal transduction pathways, hormone secretion and cell proliferation.My main, long term interest is to study how the central nervous system controls reproduction, and how external stimuli, such as food or environmental agents, can alter this regulation. I plan to use in-vivo as well as in-vitro approaches to study this regulation, and the mechanisms involved in it.

    Since I joined Dr Nicholas Webster’s lab, I have been trained in cellular and molecular techniques and the use of cell lines. I used viral vectors to over express proteins involved with GnRH signaling in the LbetaT2 cell line. I also collaborated with other members from the lab to investigate the sensitivity of FSHbeta subunit to pulsatile GnRH. The result of this collaboration was a publication in Molecular Endocrinology.
