Marina has over 20 years experience in Molecular Genetics/Genomics laboratories in both a research and diagnostic capacity. Having started out in Australia where she completed her Bachelor of Health Science with Honours. After completing here thesis, she moved to working in the private sector as a Scientist for QML Pathology, in the Molecular Genetics Department. After ~5 years of working there, she and her family moved to Canada. She joined Dr. Wilson's Laboratory at Trent University, Ontario as Research Assistant/Technician and Laboratory Coordinator. Working in the laboratories of the Natural Resources DNA Profiling and Forensics Centre she was the lead laboratory person for the Caribou project as well as being responsible for managing and training the of Wilson team of students and junior staff. Another big geographical move lead Marina to the University of Calgary in 2015 to work as a Medical Laboratory Research Technician. This position involved implementing Next Generation Sequencing (NGS) to assist in finding rare gene variants that may be the cause of rare diseases as part of the CARE for RARE nationwide research program. Marina was the sole research technician at the Calgary site, situated at the Alberta Children's Hospital. She continued working as Molecular Analyst with Dr. Aneal Khan, Marina continued to work to generate NGS data and analyze this data in the hope to further contribute to the advances in the diagnosis and treatment of rare diseases. Part of a team at the M.A.G.I.C. Clinic, MITO-FIND and other projects, where she set up a NGS laboratory to run exomes to conplete projects in an attempt to improve wait times for participants as well as developing a new variant analysis pipeline to improve diagnostic yield.As a co-founder of Discovery DNA Inc, established in 2018, Marina was appointed COO, whilst also being in charge of the laboratory and leading the variant analysis for NGS data generated in the laboratory. Marina lead her team in achieving CPSA accreditation for the laboratory in 2021 and 2023.
