Special Projects Engineer - Municipal And Commercial Business

Boston Y Alrededores, Estados Unidos

- Coordinated teams from water and energy divisions to develop an innovative business model to make wastewater treatment plants (WWTP) energetically self-sufficient (“net zero”). WWTP woulduse their own waste to generate energy, increasing urban resilience and decreasing their carbon footprint.- Directed net zero concept designs and developed profitable business models to present opportunities to various Municipal Clients.- Collaborated in the implementation of a net positive (500 KWe) project.- Developed detailed technical and economic screening model to assess viability of any WWTP togo net zero.- Presentation on this Circular Economy project to the CEO and Sr. Leadership team.Waste water treatment plants (WWTP) are large waste (“sludge”) producers and energy consumers. Many WWTP perform anaerobic digestion; a process that both “stabilizes” the sludge and generates biogas (a gas rich in methane). This stage is part of a normal waste water treatment process, but it is not usually aimed at maximizing methane generation and utilization. Methane generation can be improved by changing existing technology or some processes’ variables and organics co-digestion. A biogas based co-generation station could be installed on-site, providing electrical and thermal energy, helping the WWTP become independent on the energy from the grid, increasing the cities’ resilience. This system would also help reducing the cities’ carbon footprint by eliminating digester gas flaring, reducing biosolids hauling, avoiding emissions from organics incineration and/or landfill disposal, and displacement of energy generated with fossil fuels. This project involved three products to successfully accomplish those objectives on a particular city: 1) Screening model: assesses the technical and economic feasibility of a WWTP to become net zero 2) Screening results 3) A detailed review on the most attractive project, presented to the City for its implementation.

Research Affiliate At Stephanopoulos Lab - Biofuels Economics

Boston Y Alrededores, Estados Unidos

Studied economics and technology of processes to produce biofuels from food waste to increaseenergy resilience of local communities in India. - Studied waste-to-biodiesel vs. waste-to-biogas global economics. - Researched optimization processes for waste-to-biodiesel plants. - Collaborated scaling up a waste-to-biodiesel project using engineered microorganisms. The project was to propose an industrial scale process to produce biodiesel from food waste through a chemical process with an engineered yiest to provide local energy for transportation in different cities in India. This way we would mitigate the environmental impact of unsafely disposed food waste, help decrease the local community's dependence on biodiesel transportation to the area and make the biodiesel source cleaner. We studied the food waste, transportation and biodiesel market of different communities and the economics of a local industrial scale process. We estimated the required investment in equipment and recurrent operating costs and revenues.
