About Michelle Marincel Payne

As an experienced and adaptable engineer and educator, I seek to be, and help my students become, creative, entrepreneurially-minded, and empathetic engineers. The stories we tell ourselves influence our thoughts and behaviors. To support resilience, sensemaking, and a sense of belonging for engineering students, I infuse narrative storytelling into technical engineering courses. I also produce the Story@Rose podcast to inspire students to reflect, connect, communicate, and find their STEM identities (https://rose-hulman.edu/storyatrose/). To support high-quality teaming experiences which generate high-quality engineering work and research, I co-created and teach a framework for how to foster psychological safety and create high-performing teams through role-play (https://engineeringunleashed.com/card/3679). Further, I co-lead a project to infuse an entrepreneurial-mindset in undergraduate research with a set of flexible modules to support students and faculty (https://engineeringunleashed.com/card/3619).I am a current NSF ASCEND Fellow, a 2023-24 KEEN Fellow, a previous KEEN Community Catalyst, a 2018 ExCEEd Fellow, and the 2019 ASCE Daniel V. Terrell Awardee. I also enjoy consulting as a part of the water resources team at Lochmueller Group to provide water, wastewater, and stormwater solutions for communities across Indiana.
