Throughout my short work experience with the Omaha Nation FDP, I have gained the ability to bridge communication gaps with our FNS Regional office, generate a healthy relationship with neighboring FDP sites, repair broken bonds with previous vendors with whom the Omaha Nation FDP conducted business. I was able to create a friendly atmosphere for the clients that we serve and bring aboard a great staff who appreciate the opportunity to provide a service for the clients. With the position of Program Director, I submitted a letter of interest for the Mountain Plains Nutrition Advisory Committee and was elected as a member. This committee is responsible for making decisions to promote healthy eating with USDA foods for the 30 tribes within the Mountain Plains Region. Within nearly two years of employment, during the 2015 National Association of Food Distribution Programs on Indian Reservations (NAFDPIR) annual conference, I ran for the Secretary seat as was elected for a 2-year term. During the 2017 NFADPIR annual conference, I ran, unopposed and was again elected for a 2-year term. I am thankful for the opportunity to be apart of an organization who really truly cares about the people that we serve. With the Secretary position, comes great responsibility and also allows me to be a part of the Food Package Review Workgroup. This group of program directors are responsible for working with USDA at the state, regional and national levels to find healthier ways to enhance the FDPIR food package, promote healthy eating for the benefits of the Healthy Eating Index (HEI), strengthen as well as sustain a great food product for the people and clients of the FDPIR.
