Science Writer, Corporate & Foundation Relations, Office Of Development
Assistant Director, Sackler Institute For Biological, Physical & Engineering Sciences
The Raymond and Beverly Sackler Institute for Biological, Physical, and Engineering Sciences seeks to bring together scientists and students from across Physics, Biology, Chemistry, Engineering, and Medicine in order to promote collaborative research and teaching initiatives. The RBSI works to eliminate traditional boundaries between scientific disciplines. At the RBSI I planed and managed interdisciplinary academic programs, reported on ongoing research within the Institute to donors, and communicated with scientists, students, and administrators across diverse disciplines of science.
Postdoctoral Fellow (Intramural Research Training Award)
The Hinshaw lab is interested in the structure and function of dynamin family GTPase proteins in the cell. I used cryo-EM, confocal microscopy, and a variety of biophysical and biochemical techniques to study macromolecular assembly and mechanism of action of the mitochondrial membrane fusion protein mitofusin 1.
Graduate Student
As a graduate student in the lab of Andrew Miranker, I studied proteins and peptides that self-assemble into stable amyloid structures. These aberrant protein aggregations are implicated in a variety of diseases. I engineered a mimic amyloid fiber that specifically binds islet amyloid polypeptide (IAPP), a peptide hormone co-secreted with insulin. IAPP aggregation is a hallmark of type II diabetes. The IAPP amyloid mimic binds IAPP peptides and catalyzes their aggregation. This work contributed to understanding what causes amyloid formation and how to control and prevent it.
