My name is Mariska Janssen. I’m currently working as a medior researcher at rehabilitation center Klimmendaal. Previously I've worked as a postdoc at the department of rehabilitation at Radboudumc, where I also obtained my PhD degree in 2017. The title of my PhD thesis was ‘Upper extremity function in Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy – Mechanisms of declined task performance’. My PhD was part of the Flextension A-Gear project, which focused on the development of new arm supports/exoskeletons for boys and men with Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy. As a postdoc, I was involved in several studies related to neuromuscular disorders, 3D motion analysis, arm supports, fatigability, and martial arts training. In my current function at Klimmendaal, I'm involved in research related to movement and performance. Next to my work as a researcher, I’m the founder and director of Tigers4life, a company that teaches important life skills and self-defense to children between the age of 3 and 8 years. The idea for the company came from my biggest hobby Taekwon-Do, which I practice for over 22 years. In the future, I hope to keep working as a researcher in combination with the further development of my own company. Currently, I’m starting a new business, in which I’m planning to build a martial arts training location aiming to facilitate and provide martial arts lessons for many different populations. My vision is that martial arts can help to improve physical, mental and social wellbeing in many different populations, especially in vulnerable groups such as young children, elderly, people with disabilities and people with chronic illness. I’m always looking to form new collaborations and share ideas!
