Chi Alpha Epsilon was formed to recognize the academic achievements of students admitted to colleges and the universities through non-traditional criteria and serves developmental, SSS, McNair Scholars, and Educational Opportunity Program students. Its purposes are to promote continued high academic standards, to foster increased communication among its members, and to honor academic excellence achieved by those students. The involvement of eligible alumni enables networking for members. Programs sponsored by the society encourage other students toward this accomplishment. The honor society also has the potential to be a significant political force in the support of funding for developmental studies and educational opportunity programs nationwide.

The program combines access, academic support and modest financial support to make higher education possible for students who have the potential to succeed, despite poor preparation and limited financial resources. Since program inception, more than 55,000 students have graduated.

Peer Mentors establish a helping relationship with their assigned first year students. The objective of this relationship is to provide support for first-year students as they adjust to their college experience. Peer Mentors work in conjunction with their assigned EOP Advisor. Their role is to strongly encourage the first-year students to fully utilize the support services that the EOP provides. The primary focus of our department is to help foster student growth and development in and outside of the classroom. In doing so, we take a very active and direct role in dealing with our students in matters of academic, financial, personal and career concerns. Peer Mentor's caseloads consist of approximately 5 to 7 first year students. Peer Mentors work approximately 7 - 10 hours per week. The number of work hours depends on time spent with first year students outside of required meetings. Peer Mentors are encouraged to attend campus activities with their protégés at the Peer Mentors discretion.
