As an intern supporting two literary agents I read and evaluate queries, partials, and full manuscripts. I also generate reader’s reports, rejection letters, editorial letters, and pitch letters. Part of the internship program is attending weekly tutorials on a range of subjects with a specific focus on the editorial process.

This opportunity came to me through my participation in the Summer Publishing Institute through New York University. In this role, I worked primarily in the autographing section of BookExpo and BookCon which entailed setting up, organizing, and managing the various author signings. In addition to answering guests questions and directing them throughout the convention center, I worked hands-on with publicists to ensure the event went smoothly.

In this key-holder position, I worked in the Children's and Teen departments to help patrons find books. This meant developing a vast knowledge of our physical catalog as well as what was available through other libraries. It also meant knowing what was popular or gaining popularity as well as similar titles. so as to anticipate what people might be looking for.

This role was a part-time management position which required communication with the other managers and the staff to make sure we were working efficiently. I quickly learned the ins and outs of retail and merchandising as well as numerous skills that are applicable to any job I take in the future such as customer service, time management, and prioritization.

In this seasonal position, I worked outside in the Sports Legends Experience which entailed working in a variety of areas throughout the day. This role required organization and the ability to follow directions and enforce rules particularly when working with multiple families at once.

In this internship, I worked in the Oceans building specifically in the Water Quality Lab where I was responsible for collecting and testing water samples twice a day to make sure all of our tanks were healthy. If any of the tanks were off in their results it was my responsibility to retest and figure out how to adjust the water accordingly. This role taught me how to step up even as an intern because a few weeks into my internship my manager took another job and more responsibility fell to me while they found her replacement.
