Marissa is originally from Seattle, where she first learned to love the mountains and the ocean. After a brief stint as a professional snowboarder, she was surprised to learn that she also loves the law. As an attorney at Cooley LLP, she represented both public and private companies in a wide range of corporate transactions. Later, she represented clients in real property disputes as a member of Best Best & Krieger’s litigation team. After several years in big law, Marissa abandoned a conventional career path in favor of the road less traveled. She sailed around Borneo, spent a lot of time underwater, and ultimately found herself managing a small dive shop on the north coast of Bali. Over the next two years, she successfully grew the company to a successful dive training center with multiple locations, creating a nationally recognized brand and learning to speak Bahasa Indonesia in the process. During her time in Asia, she also served as the Policy Director and CFO for a shark research organization. It was during this time that Marissa realized that her passion for the law is deeply connected to her desire to amplify good things in the world. Craving cooler weather, Marissa returned to California in 2015 to start her own company. She is the co-founder of Oceans Forward, a non-profit dedicated to creating a network of scalable marine conservation initiatives that was featured in BBC’s Blue Planet series.Marissa’s career path is unconventional, and she is unabashedly unapologetic in that regard. She is proud of choosing a life rooted in passion that has enabled her to cultivate courage, demand uncompromising ethics, and deliver empathetic, practical legal advice with uncommon results.
