Profile bio

About Marissa Nelson

I’m a list-maker, time manager, event producer and writer/reporter. I care a lot about making an impact — whether helping inform folks with information they need to move through the world; making room for those on the margins to feel seen, heard and represented (in media/journalism and otherwise); or creating space and opportunity for joy. At The 19th News, I produce events to do just that. From financial workshops to promote economic mobility to an interview with actor Brian Michael Smith to celebrate Pride Month, I work with our events team to make sure our events — and inherently our journalism — serves those whose perspectives and needs are often left out of media coverage, namely women, people of color and LGBTQ+ people. Before working at The 19th, I produced, reported and wrote for WTTW News Chicago Tonight, and helped found DePaul’s online magazine, 14 East, where I was editor-in-chief. I have bachelor’s degrees in Journalism and Public Relations from DePaul University, and I have my master’s in Journalism from DePaul. I’m versatile, resourceful and deadline-driven. I take initiative, receive criticism well and always search for ways to improve my work and my impact. If you have freelance work — whether event producing, copywriting, reporting or otherwise — please reach out to me so we can discuss. I am also interested in teaching journalism and journalism adjacent courses.

Listed skills include Positivity, Social Media, Broadcast Journalism, Communication, and 13 others.
