About Marissa Stern
I graduated from Michigan State University with a B.A. in Anthropology and a minor in Spanish, with specializations in environmental studies and Latin American studies. My career goal combined an interest in Latin American culture with environmental sustainability. While at MSU, I spent a semester in Quito, Ecuador studying ecological preservation in the Amazon and the Galápagos Islands. During my final year at Michigan State, I was a program assistant at Michigan Energy Options, a nonprofit organization dedicated to environmental sustainability in the Lansing area, where I conducted extensive community outreach and education. Currently, I coordinate energy efficiency programs and provide energy literacy webinars in schools throughout Michigan for The National Energy Foundation. I also provide cultural event support throughout Detroit, including the recent grand opening of Michigan Central Station and additional freelance initiatives.Upon graduation, I moved to Costa Rica to combine my strong interest in environmental sustainability and Latin America and in developing my Spanish skills. While in Costa Rica, I worked at an environmental organization in a remote area of the country that focused on ecotourism This experience deepened my appreciation and commitment to ensuring that our environmental resources - both in Latin America and in the United States - are protected. Since then, I have lived in Guatemala where I worked in ecotourism and taught English in order to learn more about the cultural landscape of the indigenous people. Recently I spent six months traveling to remote areas of Mexico to study the intersection between ecotourism and music. From there I spent three months in Cuba studying the roots of traditional local music. As a result of all of these experiences, I am bilingual in Spanish and English both in oral and written communication. I also achieved certification in Teaching English as a Second Language (TEFL).
