Waag operates at the intersection of science, technology and the arts, focusing on technology as an instrument of social change, guided by the values of fairness, openness and inclusivity. Waag’s dedicated team of sixty thinkers and makers empowers people to become active citizens through technology. I am part of the Code research team and will develop current and new projects concerning digital technologies.

I support Prof. Dr. Philip Brey and Dr. Karolina la Fors with their course Data Ethics. This course gives the employees of the Belastingdienst and Achmea practical tools to analyse and ethically evaluate their own use cases.

I am a student assistant in the Horizon2020 projects SIENNA and SHERPA, led by Prof. Dr. Philip Brey. SIENNA aims to create a framework for stakeholder-informed ethics for new and emerging technologies that have a high socio-economic and human rights impact (sienna-project.eu). The main focus lies with human genomics, human enhancement, and AI and robotics. My role is to help with the structural identification and categorization of emerging technologies. The SHERPA project analyses how AI and big data analytics impact ethics and human rights. In dialogue with stakeholders, the project is developing novel ways to understand and address these challenges to find desirable and sustainable solutions that can benefit both innovators and society(project-sherpa.eu).

During my internship, my main objective is to research gender recognition software and deliver recommendations for creating more inclusive and accurate facial recognition tools for gender identification. Additionally, I will support current projects in the Code research group and assist the Diversity and Inclusion work group.

The Covid-19 pandemic was a lucrative period for educational technologies; Grasple expanded their business at record speed. As such, they required more helpdesk support. As I had experience at Grasple and knew the systems, they asked me to step in and help wherever possible.

educate. is a grassroots non-profit organisation that works to empower children and young people in Honduras through supporting community-driven development projects.We aim to break down the unequal power relations inherent to so much non-profit work by flipping the concept of “aid” on its head: instead of going to Honduras with programmes we want to implement, communities and organisations in Honduras reach out to us with their own ideas. We then work as a behind the scenes actor to drive community-led change through education-related projects. Our deep-rooted and growing network across Honduras allows us to make our support available to communities and organizations across the country, including those most vulnerable.
