Maritza is a recent graduate at San Diego State University with a Bachelors of Liberal Arts in Journalism. Her desire to cover social issues started in the 4th grade when she wrote about social issues for her elementary school’s paper. Maritza was an editor for The Oak Leaf, Santa Rosa Junior College news media. She has won a national award for her COVID-19 coverage and has been featured as a panelist for the California Humanities Youth and the Ballot. As a 2021 Democracy and the Informed Citizen Emerging Journalist Fellow, she used Adobe Audition to produce her NPR-syndicated podcast, "Chronic Catastrophe." She was awarded a scholarship by the Society of Professional Journalists for her podcast, "Oops...they did it again." During her time at San Diego State, she was the social media assistant for KPBS, the social media manager for the National Association of Hispanic Journalists SDSU chapter, a staff writer for the Daily Aztec, an anchor for Mundo Azteca, and podcaster for KCR College Radio. In all of her past and current work, she continues to work towards giving a voice to the voiceless.
