Operator In Training
Laboratory Assistant At Osvaldo Sala'S Lab
I was a Collaborative Researcher on the project water availability controls on above-below ground productivity: Herbivory versus plant response project in Osvaldo Sala’s laboratory. Some of my duties were: organize the laboratory, control and processing of hazardous waste according to ASU procedures, and purchasing of reagents.I attended laboratory meetings as well as attending the training for Laboratory safety, Hazardous Waste Management, and Fire Safety/Prevention, by Environmental, Health and Safety Department in ASU.I worked with samples from diverse research projects, from analysis of soil and water chemistry to processing of leaf and root material. Also, I trained students for sample processing of biomass, root, and soil samples.I reviewed and extracted information from scientific articles for a meta-analysis, which was published in two scientific publications (National Science Foundation funded project). Finally, I managed databases, synthesized information and communicated with my supervisor and graduate students as part of the job.
Environmental Engineering Instructor
I was the instructor of the Sustainable Development Class for environmental engineering students (senior-level class). This experience allowed me to communicate complex ideas to students and develop my organizational skills.
Graduate Research Assistant
During my master’s degree I studied with Dr. Enrico Yepez in the “ecohydrology and stable isotopes laboratory”. Also, I was co-advised by Dr. Sergio de los Santos Villalobos with the “biotechnology of microbial resources Laboratory”.I worked with the National Commission of Natural Protected Areas, and Nature and Culture International as a science advisor. Our results would help governmental agencies in creating public policies that benefit the community.During two years and four months, I worked on my research project which consisted of evaluating the dynamics of carbon in soil controlled by biological processes at four sites of ecological succession in a dry tropical forest of northwestern Mexico. To achieve that goal, I performed field work (e.g. collecting soil samples, measurement of soil respiration and soil temperature, building, installing and removing litter decomposition traps, collecting precipitation data), laboratory work (e.g. microbial population (CFU) of soil and litter, determinate %C and %N of soil and litter), and research from scientific papers.I participated in national conferences (e.g. Mexican Carbon Program), as well as international conferences (e.g. 3rd Biotechnology Summit), where I wrote technical abstracts, book chapters, communicated with scientists, and received feedback about my research project.Technical Skills: I was trained to use laboratory equipment such as: FLASH 200, TOC-L, LICOR-840; I processed my research data with MATLAB and Sigma Plot, and I used Arc GIS to create maps of my study site.
