I started Carmar Transport Brokers in 2007 due to the demand for reliable transportation for cement from the Free State Province to the Eastern Cape. I entered into a contract with the local cement production company (Holcim, later taken over by Afrisam) to transport their cement products using flatbed trucks. I subcontracted and outsourced work to 26 companies, creating economic empowerment and jobs while earning commission and broker fees. I employed and managed a staff compliment of 40 staff consisting of 28 administrators / book keepers, 12 fleet and emergency response personnel, and deployed 6 fleet response vehicles for road side maintenance, minor repairs and services. All operations complied with contractual agreements and Road Traffic Inspectorate and other laws and safety requirements. My year-on-year average turn around was +/- ZAR 10 to 15 million per annum with operations spanning across 2 provinces, transporting 160 loads of cement per day. In 2021, for personal reasons, I sold the business.
