I am a civil engineer, certified passive house designer, and occasional carpenter. I love numbers, diagrams, and formulas, but I'm also equally passionate about wood and its endless potential as a structural material, and about sustainable building solutions. Since 2017, I'm also a vlogger and an online content creator. My interest in sustainability and integrated solutions peaked with PRISPA - the first Romanian team to take part in the Solar Decathlon International Architecture and Solar Technology Competition for Houses, the 2012 edition. I used the information and know-how that I acquired with PRISPA to experiment with unconventional and ecological materials in projects such as The Bales of Straw House, from Dorohoi, Romania, or the Social Center Boldești Scăieni - the first educational center from Romania to be built from bales of straw, on a foundation made up of metal bolts. Some of my recent projects are as follows: the Bragadiru Passive House, with the best air-tightness coefficient in Eastern Europe, the Buhnici House - the first premium passive house from Romania, and one of the top 10 such houses in the world, and the Wooden Block from Suceava, the first tall building in Romania to be built on a CLT structure. Another CLT structure I take pride in is the Călțun Refuge, which I designed and then moved to the mountains with the help of a helicopter. The Călțun Refuge was the first Romanian project to be nominated for the prestigious Mies van der Rohe Award, in 2017. A series of certified passive houses followed suit, such as #casacusoare and #casacucireș. Then, it was time for Casa SYAA, one of the first premium buildings in a high-end residential neighborhood in Bucharest, and the CREATOPY Offices in Oradea, the biggest CLT building in Eastern Europe. I share all the knowledge that I've gathered in my extensive career with professionals - in magazines such as Revista Dulgher, Revista Arhitectura (I coordinated an entire edition dedicated to passive housing), and through courses and workshops. With non-professionals, I share my knowledge through my Youtube channel - www.youtube.com/c/MariusSoflete - where I've posted over 250 videos, and through the content I create on social media. My credo is that we can significantly improve the quality of the built environment through education, by sharing information, and by respecting best-practices guidelines. The way we build directly influences the way we live and inhabit a place, and implicitly our quality of life.Let's build better together!
