My research explores the intricate connections between nature, biodiversity loss, urbanization, pollution, the microbiome, and human health. As a key member of multidisciplinary research consortia, I collaborate with experts in environmental science, medicine, immunology, psychology, and technology to enhance planetary health. My work focuses on developing sustainable and resilient green space solutions aimed at reversing ecosystem degradation, with significant implications for human health and well-being.

I was the principal investigator (from 2020 to 2021) in the multidisciplinary ADELE (Immune defense and living environment) ecosystem project of the University of Helsinki and as a project manager (2018-2020) of ImmunoGarden (New business from research ideas) - project funded by Business Finland. The ADELE project developed solutions to prevent the development of immune-mediated diseases and ImmunoGarden developed proof-of-concept gardening and landscaping materials that are scientifically proven to enhance development and normal functioning of the immune system. I was also a member of HEDIMED (Human Exposomic Determinants of Immune Mediated Diseases) consortium funded by European Union's Horizon 2020 programme. HEDIMED focuses on common chronic immune mediated diseases that cause a significant disease burden, including type 1 diabetes, celiac disease, allergies and asthma. Previously I worked as a PhD candidate (2017-2018) in the KOTA (Towards healthy adulthood) – project funded by Helsinki Metropolitan Region Urban Research Program. KOTA examined how greening of daycare center yards affects children’s health and well-being in an urban environment.

My responsibilities as a research assistant included vegetation surveys, and biotechnology and chemical laboratory analyses in ADELE (Autoimmune Defense and Living Environment) strategic research opening. ADELE produced knowledge which facilitates the development of solutions that balance and enhance the function of immune systems. The ADELE is based on large population cohorts and data sets, containing information on the reasons behind immune-mediated diseases, wellbeing and life habits. Based on extensive analysis of these data sets and novel experiments, the ADELE consortium will develop scenarios on how to enhance the fitness of the immune system. These scenarios will utilise the most modern medical, biological, sociological and urban-planning information, and facilitate currently non-existing, commercial solutions.
