Interaction Coordinator And Postdoctoral ResearcherUniversity Of Helsinki Sep 2019 - PresentHelsinki Area, FinlandI have a dual role in multidisciplinary research project Leg4Life, which aims to promote the health and welfare of environment and humanity by increasing the production and feed and food use of home-grown legumes (pea, faba bean, lupines, clovers). As interaction coordinator in the project, I work with stakeholders and other researchers in the project ensuring that the research project provides answers to the knowledge needs different stakeholders have (policymakers, food and feed companies, NGOs etc.). As postdoctoral researcher in the project, I study the use of grain and forage legumes in dairy cow diets aiming to minimize the environmental footprint of production and enhancing high product quality (e.g B12 vitamin in milk). -

Postdoctoral ResearcherAarhus University Jan 2019 - Oct 2019Tjele, DenmarkI worked with several research projects related to the effects dairy cow nutrition on greenhouse gas emissions. The studied feeds include grass vs. maize silage and sugar beets. -
Visiting ResearcherWageningen Livestock Research Sep 2018 - Dec 2018Wageningen, Gelderland Province, NetherlandsI worked in a research project where the methane mitigation potential of North-Western European seaweed species was studied in vitro and in vivo. -
Doctoral Candidate In Animal NutritionUniversity Of Helsinki Jun 2014 - Dec 2018Helsinki, FinlandI started my PhD project in June 2014 and I will defend my doctoral thesis in May 2019. In my PhD thesis, I'm studying the use of microalgae as a protein feed for dairy cows. The high protein content, rapid growth and high productivity of microalgae make them a very attractive alternative to conventional protein feeds. As they can be grown in land areas unsuitable for other agricultural production, microalgae do not compete with other food production for land area. These characteristics are valuable, as a future aim is to double food production for feeding the increasing human population while halving the ecological footprint. The aim of my PhD project is to compare the effects of different microalgae species (Spirulina platensis, Chlorella vulgaris and Nannochloropsis gaditana) and conventional protein feeds (rapeseed meal, soya bean meal and/or faba bean) on the feed intake, nutrient utilization and milk production of lactating dairy cows. In particular, the effects of different protein feeds on the nitrogen and phosphorus utilization of the animals are examined. The data of my PhD project consist of four physiological trials each conducted with 4 to 8 dairy cows. Four peer-reviewed articles will be published of the trials. First of them is recently published in Animal Feed Science and Technology. The supervisors of my PhD are docent Seija Jaakkola and professor Aila Vanhatalo (Department of Agricultural Sciences, University of Helsinki). -
Technical AssistantUniversity Of Helsinki Mar 2013 - May 2014Helsinki, FinlandI worked in research project "Algae Foods - A new ways of utilizing algae" assisting in the animal nutrition trials and preparing and analyzing samples in the laboratory. Later on, I continued as a Doctoral Student in the same project. -
Freelance WriterMtt Agrifood Research Finland Sep 2013 - Nov 2013Helsinki, FinlandILMASE-"Climate Change and Countryside" was a communication project aiming to increase the knowledge of farmers about climate change and how it affects agricultural systems and environment. Project created tools for farmers how to participate the mitigation of climate change and adapt to the changing environment. ILMASE-project brought scientist, other experts and farmers together to discuss about these topics in various workshops and seminars. Also several information cards and articles were written by specialists of different agricultural topics. As a Freelance Writer I wrote the information card "Kohti kestävämpää kotieläintuotantoa" [Towards More Sustainable Livestock Production] for ILMASE-project. The information card describes 9 steps that will decrease environmental losses of livestock production and improve the resource efficiency of farms. -
DesignerBaltic Sea Action Group Jun 2013 - Aug 2013Helsinki, FinlandJärki (Sensible agriculture) -project is a cooperation project between Baltic Sea Action Group and The Nature and Game Management Trust Finland. The Finnish name of the project stands for Sensible enhancement of water protection and biodiversity in agriculture. The project focuses on agri-environmental issues, i.e. water protection, biodiversity and connected recreational use in Finland. Järki-project aims to solve problems that are acting as barriers for these measures to be put into practice in the farm level. This varies from solving practical issues to proposed changes to the agri-enviromental scheme. As a designer I was involved in creating web-based map data bank of the environmental actions conducted on the collaborative farm of Järki-project. The map data bank is a practical tool that clarifies the meaning and implementation of different environmental friendly farming practices and it is aimed for farmers and other individuals interested in agri-environmental issues. The web-page of the project: http://www.jarki.fi/ -
Course Assistant (Sustainable Livestock Production)University Of Helsinki Oct 2012 - Dec 2012Helsinki, Finland"Sustainabe Livestock Production" course is organized every other year in the Department of Agriculture and it is part of the course series "The special topics in animal production". Course topics include defining the sustainable development in general, evaluating the sustainability of the current livestock production systems (including organic agriculture), animal welfare and ethical discussions, and ways to improve sustainability of animal production. As Course Assistant in the course "Sustainable Livestock Production" I was involved in the planning and organizing of the course. The duties included lecturing, guidance of group work and evaluation of the learning diaries of the students. -
Research TraineeUniversity Of Helsinki Jul 2012 - Dec 2012Helsinki, FinlandI worked in research project “The use of domestic grain legumes to improve self-sufficiency in the milk production chain” participating in white lupin-wheat whole crop preservation study of which I wrote my master’s thesis. -
Research TraineeUniversity Of Helsinki Mar 2012 - Jun 2012Helsinki, FinlandI was involved in the research project "Control of metabolic stress during the transition period - a key factor in the welfare of dairy cows”. During this time, I analyzed the behavior of dairy cows from videotapes using CowLog-program. The aim of this part of the project was to find out if different feeding strategies during transition period affect the behavior of lactating dairy cows, especially the incidence of stereotypical behavior. -
