I’ve worked in the television industry for more than 30 years, including 27 years as an Operations Manager for News 12 Long Island. I managed a team of 30 news photographers and editors and I produced the morning segment "Dog Day Fridays", which led to the adoption of over 200 animals from local shelters. Achieving the daily goals of this fast-paced, 24 hour operation and delivering the best product was my top priority. This required a proactive, focused, and results-oriented approach. As a 24/7, on-call operations manager, I had to solve urgent operational problems by making critical decisions in a pressure-filled environment.On a daily basis, I scheduled my field operations crew to meet the challenges of breaking news, special events coverage, and feature stories. I interacted with the editorial news team, video engineering team, and management team. I communicated and coordinated with outside vendors to order equipment, to schedule repairs of various broadcast equipment, and to address the maintenance issues of the large fleet of news gathering vehicles I was in charge of. I assessed skills and abilities of new hires, conducted performance evaluations, and fostered individual growth. I identified capital and operational budget needs and worked within those prescribed budgets to meet operational needs.As a culmination of my experience, I recently consulted Newsday on better practices for news gathering. I delivered a comprehensive report to Newsday detailing how to improve its electronic news gathering procedures, which they adopted as standard practice to improve the operations of their new Newsday TV platform. I continue to consult Newsday on how to best implement these procedures, and I complete news gathering projects for them on a freelance basis. My background includes a degree in Communication Arts, with 30 years of experience managing large and small projects, productions, assignments, and live broadcasts. As a manager, I believe in leading by example. I work side-by-side with my team, empowering them to take ownership in their role. I believe effective communication is key to leadership, and I strive to create a positive environment that motivates high performers.I am seeking a traditional role in news and broadcast operations management so that I can return to the newsroom.
