The majority of my career (30+ years) has been spent as a senior executive in health care delivery. I started in 1976 at Hillcrest Medical Center in Tulsa, Oklahoma, a 646 bed hospital with 3,000 employees. During my 11 year tenure there, I spent 5 years as the CFO, and my last 5 years as the COO and Executive Vice President. In 1987, at the age of 35, I was recruited by Aurora Health Care in Milwaukee to be the President and CEO of St Luke's Medical Center, the largest hospital in the state of Wisconsin. I served in that role for over 18 years. During the latter 10 years I also served as President and CEO for the Aurora Milwaukee Metro Region, with responsibility for multiple hospitals, clinics and other Aurora facilities. My scope of responsibility included over 10,000 employees, nearly 2,000 doctors and a budget in excess of $1.4 billion.Looking back on that career, as well as observing many other organizations over that period of time, I became convinced that the single most important ingredient in organizational/departmental success is leadership. In 2009 I was asked to join two brilliant people, who share the same passion for leadership as I do. The time I spend working now is almost exclusively devoted to teaching leadership development to senior executives and physicians, within and outside of health care.Although never more than an average tennis player, I truly love the game. In addition to regular playing, I have coached high school tennis in Wisconsin in the fall for 5 years, have coached high school tennis for the past 8 years in Florida in the winter and spring. I recently retired as a certified USTA and ITA (college) umpire official.We currently live in Florida during the fall and winter months, and in Colorado during the summer.
