About Mark Bailey

Having always been fascinated by science, and growing up for some of my formative years near the Harwell Laboratory in Oxfordshire, it was inevitable hat I would go into science as a career. Starting as an assistant scientific officer at Harwell, a BSc and Phd followed, and I moved from nuclear physics over into radiation dosimetry, where since 1995 or so I have been working, mostly with industrial high-dose irradiations but also in medical dosimetry, working with primary and secondary standards in my eleven years at the UK National Physical Laboratory, 2004-2015.Since 2015 I have been in Denmark, at the Risø High Dose Reference Laboratory, now part of DTU Health Technology. Our team here works on measurements including dose maps and calibrations, for irradiations with high-energy electrons and photons, and low energy electrons and X-rays, with dosimetry systems including alanine pellets and thin films, and the B3 radiochromic film originally developed at Risø many years ago. We also hold the Danish national standard for radiation absorbed dose, in our gammacell irradiators, although these are traceable currently to NPL.We also run training courses here or elsewhere, sometimes collaborating with NPL and Aerial at Strasbourg in France, and take part in other training activities and committee work, so that we can be found attending ASTM committee E61 meetings (developing the ASTM standards and guidance documents and helping with the workshops this committee runs every couple of years), Irradiation Panel meetings (developing guidance documents here), and some colleagues attend ISO meetings associated with international standards such as ISO 11137 on the radiation sterilization of medical devices. In my off time, I have in the past few years been sailing and helping maintain (in Spring, there is much scraping and re-tarring of the hull and ropes) the Viking ship reconstructions at the Roskilde Viking Ship Museum, with my favourite ship being Ottar, the ocean-going trader based on Skuldelev 1, preserved in the museum. Sailing these ships is not just fun (and with the 26-plus tonnes of Ottar, hard work!) - it is part of the ongoing research to figure out exactly how the Vikings sailed them; nothing from the period is written down, so it is based on interpretation of inscriptions or the wooden remains excavated by archaeologists of actual ships from a thousand years ago.

We are still working, supporting the medical device and pharma industries, during the lockdown period! At the High Dose Reference Laboratory in Risø in Denmark, we perform::- Calibrations of absorbed dose- Dose mappingAll this can be with high-energy photons (usually cobalt-60 gamma rays), or high-energy e-beams (usually 10 MeV) or low-energy e-beams (up to 300 keV).- Irradiations, in one of our laboratory gamma irradiators (dose rates up to approximately 7 kGy per hour) or our low-energy electron accelerator (between 80 and 200 keV).The industrial work we do primarily is for radiation sterilisation, but can also be for polymer crosslinking / curing, and we have also had some interesting other questions. An area of interest just now is in improving the traceability of measurements of absorbed dose with low energy electrons, where the electrons might have a very nonuniform distribution of dose inside even a thin dosimeter, possibly even stopping inside it. This generates a high overall uncertainty, and we would like to significantly reduce this. This work includes detailed Monte Carlo calculations and experimental work with former colleagues at the UK NPL, in development of an absorbed dose calorimeter for use with low-energy electrons, improving on the earlier work by colleagues here at the HDRL.Otherwise, we give courses at Risø for industry for both high-energy electron beam irradiations (at 10 MeV, using the Sterigenics Denmark Rhodotron irradiation facility at Espergærde) and for low-energy electrons (80 - 200 keV), both of which include hands-on irradiations and analysis of measurements taken in those irradiations. We also collaborate with the Panel on Gamma and Electron Irradiation in giving courses in radiation processing dosimetry, primarily with colleagues from the UK NPL and from Aérial in Strasbourg, France, where these courses are hosted, and have also recently presented courses in radiation processing for the IAEA.
