About Mark Bartel
My career has been characterized by hard work, integrity and dedication. With these characteristics and my ability to quickly become productive, I have been successful in the various positions I have held over the years. I have learned a great deal in these jobs but there is always more to learn. If you are not growing, then you are stagnating. I read and study and stretch myself in both my personal life and professional life.As a software engineer I strive to craft a quality product. However, that said, part of the skill of the engineer is to balance the need for quality and functionality against deadlines. Given the “iron” triangle of quality, functionality and schedule, that may require giving unwanted feedback for the stakeholders. As a manager, one of my responsibilities has been to take this feedback and educate the stakeholders in the choices and the alternatives. My other responsibilities as manager included striving to create an environment where the engineers could grow and produce a quality product. I subscribe to Robert Greenleaf’s ideas regarding servant leadership. As a manager I do not manage people per se but instead manage the conditions to grow the people. The practical implementation of this aim is varied. It should include the development of code standards and processes, not for the sake of paper work or control but to help teach and guide the people in good development practices. These things cannot be imposed from above but they must be practical and useful tools that the engineers find valuable.
