CurrentThe Willow School is a K-8 elementary school. Its 3-pronged mission is to: - Create an environment where students can celebrate the joy and wonder of learning as they pursue academic excellence.- Promote mastery of the English language as the basis for communication and collaboration.- Embrace a strong virtues program, which models both ethical relationships between people and between people and the natural systems that support them. We’ve come a long way from our beginnings in the basement in a church and a handful of students -- all centered around the idea of education focused on academic rigor, ethics and virtues, and living and learning within environmentally regenerative systems.Today, this ground-breaking school is regarded for its best-in-class education, and its buildings are considered the gold standard in green building. These efforts have led to emulation in the U.S. public school system as well as academic institutions around the country. As it’s founder, I led the design and construction of the U.S.’s 1st LEED Gold Educational Building (2002), the 1st LEED Platinum building in NJ (2007), and a 20K-sq-ft Living Building Challenge facility (2015), regarded as one of the country’s top net positive energy-efficient buildings. These design and construction projects ranged $5M to $8.5M encompassing 15+ subcontractors and a 15-member design team. These projects are evidence of pioneering change and persistence in the face of overwhelming resistance for innovative construction and design strategies and of my ability to continue to articulate cases to gain county and state stakeholder approval.
