About Mark Blackburn, Ph.D.

I am a Senior Research Scientist with Stevens Institute of Technology. I have been the Principal Investigator (PI) on 20 System Engineering Research Center (SERC) research tasks for both US Navy NAVAIR, US Army DEVCOM, US Space Force and DoD on Systems Engineering Transformation through Model-Centric Engineering. I also was PI on a FAA NextGen and National Institute of Standards and Technology projects and has received research funding from the National Science Foundation. I developed and teach a course on Systems Engineering for Cyber Physical Systems. I am a member of the SERC Research Council, member of OpenMBEE leadership team and core member of the Semantic Technologies for Systems Engineering initiative, which is not affiliated with the INCOSE MBSE Patterns Working Group.Prior to joining Stevens in 2011 I had more than twenty five years of software systems engineering experience. I'm involved in research in the areas of formal methods, Bayesian net modeling, model-driven engineering (MDE), modeling and simulation, the application of visualization and computation, and complex adaptive systems. I teach MDE courses for SW, V&V and systems engineering. I am an innovator of advanced V&V tools that have enabled the practical application of formal methods for model-based development and V&V. I’ve developed products and helped companies integrate model-based test automation tools with other life cycle tool environments leveraging tool chains for model-based engineering, analysis and formal V&V methods for software-intensive systems. I have worked side-by-side project teams helping them learn, pilot, adopt, adapt, develop, verify and validate methods, processes and technology for real-time, trusted and safety-critical systems. These efforts focused on using a constructive approach to V&V promoting best practices while leveraging emerging technologies such as modeling and simulation for early validation of requirements and derived requirements. I help organization incorporate design-for-testability principles into the architecture and design required to support model-based test automation, providing requirement-to-test traceability, and measures of model and test-code coverage.Specialties: Digital Engineering, Model-Based Systems Engineering, Modeling, Bayesian Nets, formal methods, requirements engineering, verification and validation, software safety, security, software reliability, automatic test vector generation, and measurement.

  • Semantic Technologies For Systems Engineering Foundation
    Core Team Member
Semantic Technologies For Systems Engineering Foundation Apr 2017 - Present
The idea of establishing a Semantic Technology Foundation for Systems Engineering originated at the 3rd JPL/NASA Model-Based System Engineering Symposium and Workshop in January, 2017.Charter:The Semantic Technologies Foundation Initiative for Systems Engineering is to promote and champion the development and utilization of ontologies and semantic technologies to support system engineering practice, education, and research. Mission:The mission of the initiative is to collect a suite of interoperable ontologies that are logically well-formed and accurate from both scientific and engineering points of view. The initiative will charter a collective of stakeholders that are committed to collaboration and adherence to shared semantic principles for the advancement of systems engineering. To achieve this, initiative working group participants will voluntarily adhere to and contribute to the development of an evolving set of principles including open use, collaborative development, and non-overlapping and appropriately-scoped content. They will capture and maintain metadata for each ontology to encourage implementation and reuse.

I work with Consortium members on a wide variety of software and system engineering topics. The most current efforts are focused on helping members improve software systems engineering by understanding how to adopt model driven engineering (MDE) methods, tools, and practices. I'm developing guidelines called Integrated Engineering though Models that includes modeling adoption practices and relates to a survey on modeling tools. Other recent efforts include research into academic and industry trends such as Cyber-Physical Systems, autonomous, adaptive, self-managing systems, as well as domain specific languages, the use of Bayesian nets for modeling software reliability, model-based verification of web services underlying service oriented architectures, and development of guidelines for safety-based software assurance for a SSCI member. I developed and frequently deliver webinars and multi-day training courses related to MDE.I consulted with or trained companies and organizations such as AT&T, BAE Systems, Boeing, Citibank, CSC, DARPA, DHS, EDS, Embraer, General Dynamics, Hamilton Sundstrand, Honeywell, Lockheed Martin, Medtronic, NASA, NCR, NIST, Northrop Grumman, Qualcomm, Raytheon, Rockwell, Pratt Whitney, SRA, UTC, and Xerox for the last 17 years.
