I am currently employed as a propellant chemist for Roxel (UK Rocket Motors) Ltd. This entails formulating, characterising, developing and qualifying propellants, inhibitors and insulating materials. As part of this I work closely with other chemists, materials scientists, project managers, engineers, production staff and other staff across the company. I also regularly meet with important customers, and produce high-quality reports and presentations which are delivered both internally and externally. Within the company I have regular involvement within research projects, double base and composite propellant chemistry, and am lead UK chemist on projects with the French side of the business. I have also been involved with physical and chemical testing of highly sensitive and energetic materials, and performed costing exercises on projects. I regularly work with a range of polymers and hazardous materials and as such regularly use good safety practice (COSHH etc.). I have also been introduced to process improvement techniques such as ISO9001, EN9100 and Lean Six Sigma, for which I have undergone white belt training. During my job I regularly have to quickly learn and understand complex new subjects, as well as getting up to speed on existing projects.

PhD in inorganic coordination chemistry under the supervision of Dr Deborah Kays at the University of Nottingham. This entailed the synthesis, characterisation and reactivity of a series of air- and moisture-sensitive compounds of the main group and transition metals. During my time as a PhD student I became highly adept at working with and handling pyrophoric air- and moisture-sensitive compounds, including the use of a Schlenk line and a glove box. I have also become proficient in many laboratory-based skills, several forms of spectroscopy and characterisation including X-ray crystallography. I am also able to use a variety of other chemical software. I also developed and trialled several of my compounds as catalysts for ring-opening polymerisation of lactides. Overall my time involved efficient planning, designing and undertaking my PhD project within given guidelines as well as the rational design, implementation and reporting of my own research and experiments. This entailed keeping an accurate, up to date lab book. Throughout my PhD I supervised and demonstrated to classes of sixty undergraduates in the teaching laboratories, as well as taking on the supervision of master’s and project students. These required effective listening and communicating, as well as problem solving and quick thinking.
