Intuitive Surgical, maker of the da Vinci line of robotic-assisted surgical systems, is the global leader in the field of minimally invasive robotic-assisted surgery, where Intuitive is “taking surgery beyond the limits of the human hand and human perception.” I lead the operations of Intuitive’s $2B surgical instruments and accessories business unit, which includes robotically-manipulated medical devices ranging from fully-wristed graspers, needle drivers, and scissors to intelligent surgical staplers, vessel sealers, and cautery energy devices. My responsibilities span from Sales & Operations Planning and Master Scheduling to Manufacturing Operations and Global Supply Chain.

Led Intuitive’s New Product Introduction (NPI) engineering organization, which focuses on developing new surgical instruments and accessories, evolving them from concept through regulatory approvals to sustainable volume manufacturing. This includes development and commercialization of the novel manufacturing processes necessary to provide measurably superior “Patient Value” by improving surgical outcomes and reducing surgical trauma.

Though best known for making perhaps the world’s most sophisticated robotic systems, Intuitive’s primary sources of revenue come from the innovative surgical instruments employed by its surgical systems. As Sr. Director of Production Instrument Engineering, I guide the engineering organization responsible for producing the instruments and surgical accessories that comprise Intuitive’s extensive Product Catalog. These products provide surgeons with superior surgical vision, dexterity, and precision in order to improve patient outcomes.

Established the Equipment Engineering organization, which develops the custom robotic automation at the heart of Intuitive’s manufacturing infrastructure. In “designing the robots that make the robots”, Equipment Engineering uses precision motion control, real-time control, machine-vision, factory-scale SCADA, and data analytics to ensure previously unattainable manufacturing quality and efficiency. This enables Intuitive to produce unparalleled state of the art robotic, vision, and instrument products cost-effectively in North American locations like Silicon Valley.

RYAA provides faith-based leadership, sports, and character development programs to under-resourced youth in the East Palo Alto and Belle Haven communities. Over 800 young people participate in our leadership, soccer, basketball, tennis, flag football, wrestling, martial arts, or summer camp programs annually, with 80% of the coaching, mentoring, and refereeing roles filled by youth who have matriculated from prior RYAA programs. Led the leveraged buyout of a small Bay Area contract manufacturer and orchestrated its transformation into a proprietary products OEM, developing a wide range of consumer and industrial products for national brands such as BioControl, Hot Spring, Jacuzzi, Lift-Master, Specialized Bicycle, and Boeing. During this period Harbor has grown at an annual rate 16% higher than its core market, ultimately becoming North America’s largest producer of custom electromechanical & hydro-mechanical products within its target market segments. This is a very hands-on, entrepreneurial role, with responsibilities that include personally setting the company’s strategic direction, negotiating major sales contracts, and designing the company’s products, while overseeing engineering, quality, supply chain, and production operations. These activities involve the management of in-house, contract, and outsourced personnel working on-site, off-site, and in offshore locations across the US and Asia.

Served on the board of this industry leader in tamper-evident cap and closure lining material. Set strategic direction, evaluated CEO performance, approved annual budgets, monitored financial performance, and provided technical guidance on critical projects, delivering a shareholder ROI of more than 200% during my tenure.

Directed the creation of Silicon Valley’s seminal electronics enclosure manufacturer, developing turnkey electronic products, less the main system board(s). This resulted in Trend becoming the primary enclosure provider to Apple Computer, Cisco Systems, Dell Computer, HP, Microsoft, Palm, Sun Microsystems, Tivo and many other pioneering electronics companies. Resonsible for P&L of individual manufacturing facilities. Directed Trend’s global expansion from a single California facility generating $50M in annual revenue, to 22 plants worldwide, generating nearly $700M in annual revenue. In the process, managed five strategic corporate acquisitions, the creation of nine greenfield facilities or expansions, and capital investments of nearly $100M.

Responsible for R&D, Product Development, Process Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, Program Management, Tooling, Maintenance, Facilities, and Capital Expenditures. Personally led product development activities for the enclosure subsystems of many category-changing products, including the Apple Powerbook, Cisco GSR, HP Officejet All-in-One printer, Motorola Razr, Palm Pilot, and Tivo DVR. Established and maintained the corporate Strategic Technology Roadmap, identifying and developing emerging technologies to differentiate the company in core markets. Drove collaboration initiatives to synchronize development efforts across multiple disciplines, cultures, and geographies.

Guided the creation of the first commercial wireless product line for this defense electronics pioneer. WJ/Marconi, later acquired by Ericsson, was a leading developer of RF and microwave communications equipment, including electronic warfare equipment, satellite transceivers, and related components. This effort enabled WJ to become a major provider of subsystems for the first large scale deployment of digital cellular base stations.

Led mechanical and process engineering in the development and production of wireless RF and microwave products ranging from discrete components to multi-chip module subsystems. Managed collaborative technical forums to set, articulate, and coherently pursue strategic R&D direction. Independently devised the product architecture and manufacturing methods that generated the company’s first commercial wireless product.

Responsible for all aspects of multi-million dollar defense manufacturing contracts, including profit/loss, technical analysis, proposal generation, negotiation, material procurement, resource allocation, budget management , scheduling, failure analysis, and serving as single-point contact for extensive customer interactions. Received extraordinary recognition for consistently exceeding delivery and profit goals.

Beginning in High School, wrote software code for this startup company, one of the first developers of electronic health records and computer-based health practice management software. Quality Systems was subsequently named one of Forbes 25 Fastest-Growing Technology Companies, 100 Best Small Companies, and International Business Company of the Year in the field of Computer Services. Developed professional proficiency in multiple software languages, despite being only 16 years old, a full-time student, and entirely self-taught in programming.
