The name CHAMPS derives from the initials of the five values that define our participants:Cooperative, Healthy, Active, Motivated, and Positive Students. Studies indicate Middle school years, ages 10 – 15, represent a void in youth sports programming in most school districts throughout the United States. While many “after school programs” offer sports to elementary school children, and high schools have a wide range of interscholastic sports; few options are available to middle school students who are at an age when these youngsters are most likely to drop out of sports participation.Our initial sports season will begin with basketball, coupled with academic study programs. We chose basketball as a result of the initiative of Haywoode Workman, former NBA All Star, current NBA referee, and founding director of CHAMPS.The CHAMPS Middle School Foundation is a Florida State registered nonprofit organization, which intends to use its profit to improve its services, expand beyond our initial season basketball league with additional sports leagues and programs that build on our five values. Annual excess profits are planned to fund all those Hillsborough County Educational Organizations participating in our leagues.
