About Mark Buttle

I have been a humanitarian professional since 1999: as a project or programme manager, coordinator and trainer, with wide geographical experience, analytical and leadership skills. I have worked across sectors, and all phases of humanitarian responses, including First Phase, Recovery, Transition and in the Humanitarian Development Peace (HDP) Nexus. From 2016 to 2024 I worked in WASH cluster and sector coordination, for UNICEF, Oxfam and for the Global Water Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) Cluster. From 2010 to 2016 I was Save the Children UK’s Senior Humanitarian WASH Advisor, as such, leading Save the Children’s WASH work, globally.I have wide-ranging practical experience, including significant knowledge of working in urban crises; working in winterized humanitarian responses; water governance and management institutions in countries recovering from disasters. I have experience of advocating for change and working with local and national governments to promote sustainable water management, as well as advocating to protect infrastructure under fire.A published author on WASH technical issues, I'm happy to speak publicly on overseas development and humanitarian issues, in the past presenting to charitable and professional organizations, and I have spoken on the humanitarian needs in Gaza and during the 2014 Ebola Crisis, on TV news.In 2024, I have decided to look for humanitarian consultancies:• Shorter term multisectoral or WASH humanitarian roles;• Programme Monitoring and Evaluation;• Sector Coordination; and• Training and Capacity Building.

Listed skills include Water, Sustainable Development, International Development, Proposal Writing, and 13 others.
