As outgoing Chief Executive Mark has been retained by ABF Sugar to support the business and specifically the building of a new sugar plant in Tanzania.

Mark was appointed as Chief Executive of British Sugar in April 2004 (subsequently Group Chief Executive, AB Sugar when the expanded group was renamed in 2010/11). In this role he has accountability for the AB Sugar Group of Companies. Since becoming Group CEO, Mark has overseen the transformation of the Group’s activities into the leading global sugar business it is today. Its well-established ‘biorefinery model’, builds on the belief that there is no such thing as waste; every part of the raw material (sugar cane and sugar beet) has a value which is extracted through the sugar making production process into a range of sugar and non-sugar products, as well as generating electricity at scale from natural biomass by-products within its business portfolio.Mark has built momentum behind Group safety performance improvement and establishing key and effective stakeholder relationships in all regions. Additionally, with a view to an expanding presence in the developing biofuels sector, he was at the forefront in establishing one of Europe’s largest bioethanol plants (Vivergo Fuels) of which AB Sugar is now the sole shareholder. This was in addition to British Sugar opening the first bioethanol plant in the UK at its Wissington operations in 2017. Both of these plants are helping to de-carbonise road fleets by blending our bioethanol in unleaded car fuel known as E5 and E10.He has a strong interest and expertise across the food and drink sector, acting as a Director/Chairman of Azucarera; Director of Vivergo Fuels plc; Director, British Sugar plc & British Sugar (Overseas) and has been past President of the World Sugar Research Organisation. He has also been recognised for his contribution and commitment to manufacturing as a Fellow of the Institute of Mechanical Engineers.

Worked extensively for Corus plc (subsequently renamed Tata Steel Europe Ltd.) in various senior management roles culminating in being the Managing Director, Corus Strip Products in Wales (2001-2004).As Managing Director, Mark had accountability for Corus’s flat products business in the UK. Prior to this, as Director of Portfolio Development, Mark led a special assignment, reporting to then Executive Director and subsequently Chief Executive responsible for the formulation and implementation of a major strategic review for the Group.Mark’s first role at Corus was as Director of Manufacturing, responsible for Corus Strip Products operating facilities in Port Talbot, Llanwern, Lackenby and Ijmuiden in Holland. Facilities included all steelmaking, casting, compact rolling, hot rolling and strip pickling units. The turnover was approximately £2 billion, volume 12 million tonnes pa and circa 6,500 employees. He was also responsible for all aspects of logistics, operations planning and distribution for the four flat rolling businesses in the Group.

Mark was Director of Integrated Works at British Steel Strip products and was responsible for the operation of the two main South Wales sites at Port Talbot and Llanwern. Prior to that Mark had various positions leading to Managing Director of British Steen Narrow strip, originally joining British Steel as a graduate trainee.
